Overview

The Progressive Cultural Association was part of the Communist Party of England (CPE-ML) and its successor organisation the Revolutionary Communist Party of Britain.

The group performed concerts and featured in other events that aligned with the party’s policies. Its former chair Cornelius Cardew was a noted experimental musician.

The Progressive Cultural Association featured in reports by HN13 ‘Desmond (Barry) Loader’ from 1977-1978 and from HN19 ‘Malcolm Shearing’ in 1981-1985. Despite being a front for the CPE(ML) and its successor group, the Progressive Cultural Association featured in SDS annual reports as a separate entity.
