Overview

The London Squatters Union (LSU), 1979-1984, was a coalition of the Squatters Advisory Council that included a strong International Marxist Group (IMG) contingent and activists from the less hierarchical anarchist squatter movement.

The LSU pressured the Conservative-controlled Greater London Council (GLC) to formalise the housing status of 10,000 squatters in the capital, by giving them licences and tenancies.

LSU led an occupation at Kilner House in Kennington

In 1981, LSU was involved with an occupation at Kilner House in Kennington, south-east London that was violently evicted by the Metropolitan Police Special Patrol Group. The protest challenged GLC plans to sell off its housing stock. A film explores the occupation and its eviction.
