Overview

The Campaign Against Racial Discrimination (CARD) was a British organisation established in 1964 that operated until 1967. It focused on advocating for race-relations legislation. Founding members included politician Anthony Lester and historian CLR James.

The group focused exclusively on lobbying and the implementation of the 1965 Race Relations Act was partially due to its work.  It was targeted by Special Branch even though it campaigned for racial equality exclusively through legal and parliamentary means.

CARD was targeted by HN339, who later used the cover name ‘Stewart Goodman’ in a pre-SDS Special Branch role, and was mentioned in a report on Black Power by secretive Foreign Office body the Information Research Department.
