Overview
HN828 John Arthur Stevens was Commissioner of Police for the Metropolis from January 2000 to December 2004, and as such had the end responsibility for the Special Demonstration Squad in the hierarchy.
Stevens joined the Metropolitan Police in 1963. He subsequently served as Assistant Chief Constable, Hampshire Constabulary, Deputy Chief Constable, Cambridgeshire Constabulary and Chief Constable, Northumbria Police.
He served as HM Inspector of Constabulary before rejoining the Metropolitan Police as Deputy Commissioner in 1998. He succeeded Sir Paul Condon as Commissioner in 2000.
Stevens was made a peer in 2005.
Provided a statement to Operation Herne, unclear if he took part in the Undercover Policing Inquiry.
