HN3557 Colin Philip Joseph Woods was a high-ranking police officer. In mid-December 1972, Woods was appointed to Assistent Commissioner 'C', and in 1975 to Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police. In mid-February 1977, Woods left to become HM Chief Inspector of Constabulary. (The period he was overseeing the SDS in the hierarchy was not entirily clear to the Inquiry, he may have started earlier, in March 1972, and left later, in April 1975.)
As a senior Metropolitan Police officer, Woods wrote letters to the Home Office seeking the renewal of funding for the Special Demonstration Squad. He also was involved in correspondence regarding coverage of industrial disputes with MI5 and sat of the seret Whitehall committee 'Subversion in Public Life'.
