Overview
HN143 Dennis 'Ben' Gunn was the Commander of the Metropolitan Police Special Branch between February 1988 and December 1990. In that role, he had ultimate responsibility for the SDS.
Later, he became chief constable of Cambridgeshire Constabulary, where he oversaw the setting up of the National Extremism Tactical Co-ordination Unit (NETCU).
He gave oral evidence on 20 October 2025, the Campaign Opposing Police Surveillance composed an extensive report about the hearing, where he defended the SDS and Special Branch, as well as his decisions when he was its most senior officer.
