HN1253 Victor Gilbert was a senior Special Branch officer and, from 1972 to 1976, commander of Special Branch, holding the rank of deputy assistant commissioner. 

Gilbert was Special Branch representative on the secret Whitehall Subversion in Public Life committee when it formed in 1972. He advocated for closer liaison between the Special Demonstration Squad and MI5.
