Black Power

The British Black Power movement comprised a number of groups started from 1967 onwards  across the country but predominantly in London. 

London-based groups included the Black Panther Movement Black Unity and Freedom Party (BUFP) Founded in July 1970 and active into the 1990s, Black Unity and Freedom Party (BUFP) was a Maoist Black Power group that evolved from Britain’s first Black Power organisation, the Universal Coloured People’s Association. BUFP took a revolutionary and internationalist approach, working alongside majority-white political groups on campaigns that included Irish Republicanism and women’s liberation. SDS undercovers were able to report on some BUFP activities, having infiltrated linked groups. , Black Liberation Front and the Universal Coloured People’s Association. 

One SDS officer, Peter Fredricks, admitted attempting unsuccessfully to infiltrate the Black Power movement. HN345 'Peter Fredericks' ‘Peter Fredericks’ was the cover name of a former Special Demonstration Squad undercover officer who attempted to infiltrate Black Power organisations and groups campaigning for Bangladeshi independence in 1971. His SDS and Special Branch careers were short; he had left the SDS by the mid-1970s. In the Undercover Policing Inquiry, he is known by the nominal HN345. Full page: HN345 'Peter Fredericks'
