Overview
As deputy assistant commissioner in 1977, David Helm was operational commander for the so-called Battle of Lewisham that summer. Afterwards, he interviewed SDS undercover officer HN13 ‘Barry Loader’, injured by police while deployed in a left-wing group that marched against the National Front at Lewisham, about public order at the event.
In April 1979, Metropolitan Police officers deployed on an anti-fascist march in Southall killed schoolteacher Blair Peach. Hours later, at 2am, Helm interviewed Peach’s partner Celia Stubbs. Stubbs recalls Helm being abusive towards her. Helm later appeared on television, denying that the police were responsible for Peach’s death.
